How to Stop Overthinking Everything

At some point of time, we all have this habit of overthinking. We think and think until the problem becomes bigger and scarier than it actually is. It eventually leads to non-stop worry and a stressful mind. We end up enjoying nothing in life, feeling demotivated and depressed.
This habit of overthinking the irrelevant aspects of life, is a destructive habit. Though we know that problem would not solve with overthinking, but sometimes we are not able to help ourselves. Slowly, Overthinking becomes our second nature. Ultimately, we end up spoiling our health, and peace of mind.
Over the past few years, I have learnt to make this issue small and managed to collate some strategies to reduce over-thinking. I realized with time that everything depends upon your attitude towards life, the way you react to any situation, hence I learnt to ACCEPT things, situations and everything around me, and have control on my mind. Reading books definitely helped me reach some stability in life. Hence, I would recommend each one of you reading
Sharing some experience of mine on how to stop overthinking:

1. Analyse your thoughts : This is my favorite thing to do when I am alone. Sit back and analyse the thoughts that you have in your mind. Figure out the reason why you are overthinking on a particular topic. Instead of overthinking the problem, think about the possible solutions. If the problem is out of your circle of influence, that means if you can’t do anything about it, start to ignore it.

2. Remember the 5 by 5 rule:  This is one of the best advice I got few years ago. Do not overthink about something for more than 5 minutes if it won’t matter after 5 years. Few things do not need your attention. There are so many times in my life that I have to replay this phrase in my mind and it really sets a wider perspective in my mind. If it does matter to you, implement Point No. 1. This is as simple as that.

3. Let go of the past: Most of the times over-thinkers focus on the past, wasting energy on “how could the situation have been prevented” or “What ifs”. Do not focus on what wrong happened to you or what you did in the past, for it cannot be undone. Try to forgive others not for them but for yourself. This not only cleanse your aura but only free your mind. If there are no past thoughts in your mind, there is no chance of overthinking.

4. Start being more optimistic: Often, Overthinking is about something negative. Its natural to get negative thoughts, don’t be scared to acknowledge them. The best way to stop overthinking is acknowledge negative thoughts and let go of them. There are 2 ways you can do that, one is Accept your thoughts, write your emotions and thoughts on a piece of paper. When you do so, you release your emotions out of your mind by expressing them. Another way is by replacing each negative thought with a positive one. For example, “I am not happy with my current situation” is a negative feeling, replace it with “I am going to make efforts to change it”.
